The next-generation F90 is a direct-evolution of the previous 1.5 litre model, delivering increased fuel-efficiency, reduced-weight and improved performance. Filling an important place in Yamaha’s class-leading mid-range line-up, the new F90 delivers the perfect power option for the large number of Aussie built boats that have a maximum hull rating of 90 horsepower. The four-cylinder, 16-valve, SOHC 1.8L marine engine, is not only 10KGs lighter, but an increase in displacement over the previous generation 1.5L engine aids in a richer torque-band.
The reduction in weight and improved compactness has been achieved through the adoption of a single overhead camshaft valve-train, delivers smooth and efficient performance only seen in 16-valve, four-cylinder engines of this size. The new F90 delivers a 10% improvement in fuel-efficiency and a significant reduction in noise, through improved engine unit rigidity, muffler redesign and the addition of an intake silencer. The Yamaha F90 is compatible with Yamaha’s range of Command-Link gauges, while its NMEA2000 compatibility allows for easy integration with third-party multi-function displays,…

With its increased 1.8 litre capacity and single overhead camshaft, four-valve per cylinder design, the new F90 delivers improved acceleration and power-to-weight performance.
This outboard is controlled by an advanced microprocessor Engine Control Module (ECM), which receives inputs from six major sensors located throughout the engine. This information is used to ensure the engine runs at peak performance, by delivering the right fuel/air mixture to each combustion chamber.
A 12-Volt 35-Amp high-output alternator ensures that power is always available to start the engine, even after long periods of idling or running at low revs. This not only provides extra starting power, but delivers sufficient power to run the wide array of on-board electronic devices used in modern boating.
The previous-generation F90 used a 79mm cylinder bore, in the next-generation F90 the cylinder bore size has been increased from 79mm to 81mm which provides more efficient power delivery. A larger valve has been used for increased transfer efficiency for both intake and exhaust.
The crankshaft design is offset by 5mm from the centre of the cylinder. This innovative design decreases internal friction and promotes a more efficient transfer of power to the crankshaft.
This engine features a new outer cowling design with an intake air drain system, to easily and efficiently drain away any water that enters the cowling during normal engine operation. Incoming air is routed through a labyrinth of passages that help trap and drain water before it enters the engine’s intake, for maximum reliability.
The 60mm wide single bore throttle intake minimises intake resistance and provides first-rate response for brisk-acceleration and high-speed operation.
The compact and light-weight single-ram power, trim and tilt (PTT) unit and bracket have been developed exclusively for this engine.
Yamaha’s variable trolling control allows the skipper to precisely adjust the engine’s idling speed from 550 to 1000 RPM in 50 RPM increments. The ability to finely tune the trolling speed allows fisherman to perfect their lure presentation when chasing different species of fish.
Yamaha offers a range of rigging options to suit every boat. Check out the full suite of controls, gauges, switches, props and other technologies, plus outboard performance data.
We take out the guess work in buying a new outboard, by rigorously testing our engines on Australia’s most popular boat brands. See how the F90 performs for acceleration, fuel economy and top-end speed on your favourite boat.
